Watched the pilot for J.J. Abrams's new show, Fringe. It's a pretty good pilot, so one can only hope the series doesn't end up dragging on like Lost, which I hope has a darn good ending planned out for it. Couldn't collect my glasses today because I found a scratch on the left lens and the people at the shop decided to send it back to the manufacturer. Rush job, naturally, since I've got to leave on Monday. Have to go back again tomorrow to check about getting contact lenses made. I have myopia and astigmatism, and I'm only interested in getting disposable dailies, so with this list of criteria, we'll see what the optician can come up with! I finished reading The Abstinence Teacher, and it was a bit disappointing, especially compared to Perrotta's last novel, Little Children. Don't get me wrong, Perrotta's not a bad writer, but the ending of The Abstinence Teacher just felt lazy. I read the interview excerpt tacked on at the end, and his excuse, that he couldn't picture himself writing the final game? Rubbish. Then again, you could also see it as the pinnacle of storytelling, plunging the reader into a narrative and then withholding ultimate resolution, just like how real life doesn't always present neat and tidy storylines for us to follow. Personally though, I tend to agree with what Julian Barnes wrote in Flaubert's Parrot: "Books are where things are explained to you; life is where things aren't." This week: Constitution Week |
