Finished reading Immoral not long ago. It turned out to be a bit of a disappointment, as the ultimate denouement felt too convenient. The book begins promisingly enough, with a girl disappearing under circumstances that appear to mirror a previous crime not too long ago, leading to concerns that there is a serial killer loose in the area. Yet after spending more than 200 pages building up the suspense, the author suddenly jumps the action forward three years, where we finally learn what happened to the girl. It's not a very satisfying resolution though, and overall, the plot doesn't quite live up to the blurbs on the cover. Poor pacing of the plot, I guess, which would have made for quite an effective CSI episode with some editing. Oh well. On the other hand, I finally got around to borrowing and finishing The Breadmaker's Carnival. Now that was a gorgeous feast of a book! I know I made some minor complaint about the pacing previously, but in retrospect, kudos to Andrew Lindsay for weaving a damn good story. The plot is intricate, and the characters actions ultimately ensnare all of them in the novel's titular event, with comic and tragic results in equal measure. Hard to do the book justice here, so go to the National Library and borrow it for yourself! |
