A couple of days ago, I read Mindbridge by Joe Haldeman, whom you might know better as the author of The Forever War. For a book published in 1976, it's still a pretty good read in 2008. It tells of how the discovery of an alien organism that facilitates telepathic contact changes the course of humanity. The structure of the novel could be tightened a bit, but it's an interesting novel. I also found Borges's Selected Non-fictions at the National Library, which I would definitely buy if I could only find it in a local bookstore! I already have his Collected Fictions, Selected Poems and The Book Of Imaginary Beings, and I enjoyed every one of them very much. I managed to borrow Ted Dekker's The Circle trilogy from Woodlands Regional Library, and I think I found a new author that I enjoy. Seems like his later work hasn't been as good, and it's not easily found in local bookstores anyway, although the National Library has quite a few of his novels. In any case, I'm only going to read the trilogy after I finish Andrew Lindsay's The Breadmaker's Carnival, which reminds me of Joanne Harris's Chocolat, albeit with a bit more bite to the writing. I have a thing for literature that features food prominently... This week: Reading Is Fun Week |
