Temporary Insanity Day/Chocolate Mint Day/Solar System Day
2008-02-19 @ 8:52 p.m.

Finished reading Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing and Sophie Stewart's Sharking. The former is exactly the kind of play I'd go to the theatre to see. It employs the play-within-a-play device, which doesn't work so well when you're reading the script but I would so totally get a kick out of watching it acted out. The latter reads like the kind of life my parents apparently think I'm in danger of getting sucked into after I get shipped off to the UK, one that's fueled by alcohol, drugs and sex. To date, I've only touched the first item on that list, and I intend to keep it that way while I'm over there! Nonetheless, there's something terribly riveting about learning how the characters fall apart and put themselves back together, only to fall apart again in a downward spiral of despair. (Come to think of it, this book reminds me of Niven Govinden's We Are The New Romantics and Michael Smith's The Giro Playboy. Yeah, now you know how outré my taste in books can get.) Admit it, we're all voyeurs from time to time, and it makes for an entertaining read. For me anyway. The last novel I read before this, e, was also great fun. Every bit as snarky as I expected, and then some. Makes you wonder what really goes on in offices. So now that I've stuffed my head full of somewhat lightweight fiction, I'm going to go all literary on you and start on Rainer Maria Rilke's poems. Going bargain-hunting tomorrow. I hope I manage to pick out a nice shirt or two! I really need to expand my sartorial choices in that area. That reminds me. I still haven't gone through my tees to sort out the ones to be consigned to the Salvation Army or eBay (whichever is more convenient). Think I'll do it on Thursday. Might as well toss out some of my jeans while I'm at it. Already dumped the black pair because my mum's run it through the dryer too many times and it's shrunk. Thank goodness I got it during a sale (and it wasn't even particularly nice anyway)...
