Not having a date (as usual), I spent Valentine's cutting class to attend the book launch of Romance: Volume 1. (Well, I initially intended to attend the second half of the lecture, but I figured it wasn't worth the price of an MRT ride, so I stayed on in Borders and did a little shopping.) I bought a copy, of course, and it's okay. I've only read the first five submissions, so I can't comment on the overall quality of the writing. I must say though, the editing could have been a little better. Spotted one misspelt word, a couple of omitted punctuation marks, and not a few grammatical errors. I'm a bit of a grammar Nazi, as you can tell. I'm also a stickler for details. Today, I went through my poetry and edited all occurences of words ending in -ual, as I realised that aside from "equal", all the other words I've used actually consist three syllables, not two. Oddly, I seem to have avoided using the word "usual" in my poems, probably because when counting syllables, I could never make up my mind about that word and thus substituted it with another. (I write most of my poetry when I'm outside and on the go, so no access to the dictionary for me! Though if I can't find a suitable word as a replacement, I'll look up the original word when I get home.) Nonetheless, buy the book and support Renaissance Publishing! I was feeling a bit awkward and anti-social, so I didn't hang around to socialise after getting paid. (I actually went back to hide in the Literature section. I know, I know, pathetic. You don't have to tell me that!) Randomly, I will never cease to be amazed by how interconnected people can get on Facebook. |
