Shirley passed me her copy of Murakami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Was supposed to trade her my copy of The Great Gatsby, but I confused it with The Catcher In The Rye, which is what I have, having given the former to Shu En. I feel a bit bad now. Just dusted my bookshelves, which were pretty dirty. Recently, I was thinking about what books I'd bring with me to the UK. It's probably one of the hardest decisions to make. I want my books to convey a taste in literature that is fundamentally contemporary in its sensibilities, but nonetheless reflecting an appreciation for classic stuff. At the same time, a dash of eclecticism would be nice. Call me shallow, but people definitely judge you by what's on your shelves, and just bringing my absolute favourites isn't going to be an accurate portrayal of my taste in books, simply because all of my books appeal to me on some level. Just not all the time. Ultimately though, the prime consideration is that everything that goes over will eventually have to be flown back too, which should work as a self-limiting factor on how much I bring over. I will definitely bring over my collection of Vintage authors though, no matter what. That and Russell Hoban's novels. |
