Finished Polystom, which suffers from an imbalance in its structure. A lot of the book is given over to building a picture of Polystom's universe, but too little is used to address the plot's selling point - "Two Universes, One Reality". It's a familiar enough theme. How do you know if the universe you live in and experience is real, rather than just a simulation being run? It's the kind of thing that bothers philosophers, but for the rest of us just gets in the way of living. Seriously, to worry about something like that, you've got to be living a rather cushy life. There are also far too many typographical errors in the book! Simply disgraceful. I'm now reading The Snow, which I hope will be a better novel. The career fair at Clementi Camp was a waste of time, as expected. Ben Woon, Eugene and Ka Tsai came over to play mahjong for a couple of hours, so at least I did something useful with my leave. Life would be perfect if I didn't have guard duty on Saturday... |
