Eat A Pretzel Day/Used Car Day/International School Library Day/Color Day

I like trees. They're the only things in camp I find peculiarly comforting. Here, I am surrounded by trees that have stood for possibly decades, weathering sun and rain, bearing mute witness to the passage of time and people. I would like to climb one of them, just fold myself into a quiet space above and beyond the ground and its petty concerns. Not here though, obsessed as we are with safety. Maybe when I get to the UK. Once again, I am struck by how far removed my life at present is from what it was and will be. I suppose it's the natural lot of humans to be discontented, haunted as we are by the loss of Eden. Here I am, following orders that serve no purpose other than wasting time. The only consolation I can derive from this is that I won't be around tomorrow. Enough of being selflessly industrious, it's time to look out for me, myself and I. After all, no one here will do that for me...
