Finished reading Parasite Eve by Hideaki Sena, which is another of those Japanese horror novels. This one's pretty interesting, as mitochondria play a major role in the plot, basically about how they've decided to break out of the symbiotic relationship with mankind and evolve into a new species, synthesising the two. It ends a bit anticlimatically though, so you have been forewarned. The opposite is true of The Amnesiac, which I've finally finished reading after many weeks, and it's definitely better than Sam Taylor's debut novel, The Republic Of Trees. This is despite shamelessly borrowing and referencing many other works, as I mentioned before. It's a gorgeous read, if you can get past the first half, which is somewhat plodding because nothing really happens except the building of dramatic tension, which would arguably work much better in a screen adaptation. Now it's on to the Minister Faust's novels, as well as trying to finish the really bizarre The Book Of Days by Steve Rasnic Tem. I'm not pretending to understand anything about it beyond the fact that the father's freaked out about all the things that can go wrong while raising a couple of kids. Still, I'm about a third of the way through, so I might as well stick with it till the end. I peeked at the ending anyway! Have had to plan out my leave again because of changes to the training programme. In effect, I've been able to avoid only a fraction of the lessons I was trying to escape, but I can't complain because we're already going to be short of manpower. Sucks being capable sometimes...
