It rained the entire time that I was in camp. If I'd known that it was going to start pouring in the morning, I wouldn't have bothered taking a cab to avoid being late. Nobody gives a damn about punctuality once the skies unleash their torrential fury. Finished reading Don't Tell Me The Truth About Love by Dan Rhodes in camp, a collection of whimsical tales about love and its guises. I think contemporary literature is at its best when it's not trying too hard to be serious. If literature is a reflection of the time in which it is written, then we cannot hope for the greatness of the classics to be replicated consistently today. Naturally, every so often, someone comes along and gives us a work that is truly significant, and there are contemporary authors who fully deserve to be taken seriously, but if you ask me, the most enjoyable literature around today consists of books like Don't Tell Me The Truth About Love. One ought to be able to appreciate the full spectrum of literary works, which sounds like a very grand pronouncement, but is just being sensible, if you ask me. |
