They made it back to camp. Eventually. A bunch of us stayed up to wait for them, with varying degrees of success. I confess I fell asleep pretty quickly, only waking up when the birthday boy finally made it back with his vehicle being towed. I vaguely recall people eating MacDonald's. Dumped as much work as possible onto whoever was willing to take it, so that I could sleep and read my library books. Finished Greg Egan's Diaspora, which is one of those sci-fi novels that is conceptually interesting, but when you think about it, doesn't really have a compelling story to tell. Maybe I'm just being picky. Flipped through Timothy Findley's Spadework, which wasn't as salacious as its blurb implied, so I passed. I mean, the only reason I borrowed it was because it sounded like it'd be amusing. You know, sort of witty infidelity, that kind of thing. Didn't quite reach that mark, so I'm not going to read it, at least not in the immediate future. Don't you think it's really hard to find good contemporary literature? By "good", I mean stuff that can stand beside classics from previous centuries and which you can acknowledge as being, if not equal, at the very least comparable, given the different timeframes and societies. |
