Poinsettia Day/Our Lady Of Guadalupe Day/Constitution Day (Russia)/Luciafest (Iowa)
2006-12-12 @ 9:41 p.m.

Watched Happy Feet today, which was not bad. The only objection I have is to the gap between when Mumble was at the oceanarium and when he arrived back in Antarctica. I thought that could have been mined for the storyline. Otherwise, it just seems too abrupt a jump in the narrative sequence. The whole movie has a very blatant conservationist slant, especially in the closing scenes, so you have been warned. There's also a very obvious nod to religious fundamentalism in the form of the elderly penguins who refuse to condone Mumble's dancing, denouncing him in tones that one normally hears reserved for heretics and homosexuals, to borrow some current examples. This is definitely not your typical animated movie. The singing is also quite good, especially Brittany Murphy's. Last time I heard her sing was on Paul Oakenfold's Faster Kill Pussycat, which I happened to hear while listening to the radio on the ride back to Sembawang Camp. (This was during my driving course days.) She is quite the songbird apparently...
