I'm so glad I use Diaryland instead of Blogger. When was the last time you saw anyone flame a user of the former? I speak strictly in the Singaporean context. Not that I've written anything that actually deserves flaming of course, unless said flamer really has no life, in which case, the poor sod probably needs to flame someone to get through the day. Sort of like a crutch. Vocal workshop was cancelled at the last minute because she forgot today was a public holiday. Luckily for me, Ben Woon, Dan, Derrick and Thong were at Plaza Singapura, so I joined them to watch The Prestige. I think Christian Bale was fantastic in the movie, which was freaking awesome in itself. You'll only understand why if you've watched it yourself, as it's too complicated for me to recount here and I'm really bad at doing that anyway. Seriously though, watch it! I'm even thinking of reading the novel by Christopher Priest on which the film was based. Popped by Borders with Thong after the movie because he had some discount coupons. Grabbed The Road To Dune and Sharon Shinn's Angelica. (Isn't it weird that I don't have a single book from the original Dune series, but I have all six of the prequel novels?) Should have let him give me another one at the cashier's, but it was really too late anyway. Or I could have just bought the copy of The Straits Times which the cashier offered me, so as to get the coupon inside, but that struck me as being really too desperate for the discount. Since I generally try not to buy stuff from Borders because I can get it for less at Kinokuniya with my member's card, I passed on Julian Barnes's Cross Channel and Something To Declare, both of which I've been hunting for at Kinokuniya with no success so far. I even found Mark Z. Danielewski's Only Revolutions! It doesn't seem as brilliant as House Of Leaves though. Tries too hard to be clever, but I think the complexity in this novel is more for stylistic reasons. Plus it's in hardcover and really expensive! I feel tempted to get the full-colour edition of House Of Leaves, because mine's the blue edition and it doesn't feel special anymore, now that the full-colour edition isn't just a fictional construct of Danielewski's. If only I had some spare cash and someone willing to buy my own copy... |
