Diary Day
2006-06-12 @ 9:17 p.m.

I forgot to grab Immortality when I was leaving the house. My dad refused to let me go back upstairs to get it on the pretext that I was going to be late if I didn't leave immediately. In the end, I reached Sembawang Camp with 10 minutes to spare. So now I'm stuck with nothing to read except a Gideon Bible. Well, I did borrow The Passion Of New Eve by Angela Carter from a friend two bunks down. That should provide some measure of diversion. Shirley told me she found The Devil And Miss Prym a "contemplative read". I heartily agree. It's very different from most of Coelho's other novels, thematically speaking. If you've read all of Coelho's work, like I have, you'll understand what I mean. Anyway, something struck me as I was being ferried back from Kaki Bukit Camp. There's an enclosed area in the vicinity that has these huge piles of what looks like sand. They resemble dunes that've been sculpted into incomplete pyramids. I thought the image was a wonderfully poetic representation of Singapore. This country is an artificial construct that falls somewhat short of being truly great.
