Caught Les Invisibles on the last day of the 19th SIFF. A filmlet, Empire, was screened before it, which basically consisted of shots of antiquated American scenes with 3D military vehicles superimposed on them. The effect was surreal, but rather annoying after the first 30 seconds. Thankfully, Les Invisible was better. It was rated R21, something which we didn't realise until we bought the tickets. Once again, the R21 rating was obviously slapped on because of just a few seconds in the middle of the movie. The ending didn't make sense to me, Mel or Thong, but the rest of it was quite good. The electronic soundtrack was a bonus too. Then we caught Death And The Maiden, which was okay. Not the best thing I've seen, but certainly not the worst. I think the cast lacked chemistry, although there were moments of convincing emotional intensity, like when Karen Tan's character broke down just before she recounted to her husband exactly how she was tortured and raped. Again, the ending completely baffled the three of us. Did she or didn't she kill her supposed torturer? Then who was the man at the cocktail party? Oh, there was live gunfire, but not as effective a device as in Dead Certain. Here it seemed purely gratuitous. |
