Valentine's Day/Hug Day/Heart To Heart Day/Have A Heart Day
2006-02-14 @ 8:26 p.m.

Have a lot of free time tonight, and I'm trying to decide if I should have an early night or try to finish reading Veronika Decides To Die. I think my muse has deserted me because I've been neglecting my writing for so long. I think the piece I wrote for the Warwick interview had a throwaway quality to it, and after attempting another rhyming poem, I heartily believe the poets of yore were very intelligent people indeed. The two best poems I've ever written deal with love. Not in any sentimental or soppy way, but in a detached manner that betrays a cynical vein in my writing. Not for me the cloying idealism (and blatant commercialism) of Valentine's Day. I want love that springs from friendship, that will survive the grind of quotidian life. Can you imagine committing yourself to one person till death do you part? To those about to take the plunge, we salute you, that's what I say. To return to more mundane matters, I set a personal best for my 2.4-km run today. 11:28, a time that I haven't even been close to in my entire life. Quite pleased with myself actually...
