Rain Day
2005-07-29 @ 9:44 p.m.

My block experienced a brownout yesterday, confined exclusively to my half of the block, and to my floor and the one above. It was kind of annoying, because it was really stuffy. You can't open the windows too wide at night around here, because you get all sorts of bugs flying in. My 'S' Paper essays were a very accurate reflection of how much work I've done, which is very little, apart from reading the books and poems. Assiduous behaviour starts tomorrow evening. Have been reading the Golem chapter I photocopied from Stanislaw Lem's Imaginary Magnitude, and that guy is either a heckuva genius, or able to spin very convincing bullshit. I haven't quite made up my mind. I agree with the parts of it I understand, which happens about half the time. Golem is basically a hyper-evolved AI, the sort of thing programmers dream of creating, all the while worrying that this will sound the deathknell for humanity. Plot straight out of cyberpunk fiction. Does anyone read William Gibson? I particularly like Neuromancer and Idoru. I bought a new CD today, because I've got my allowance early. It's bond's Explosive, which is a greatest hits compilation and very convenient. They even put the Dubshakra mix of Shine that I like on the CD! Time to stow away the Zen Touch for a week. Ate at Cedele today because I followed Chernise, Dan and Mel to Suntec, presumably to read. Without meaning to sound judgemental, girls being girls, we spent quite a fair bit of time in the shops instead. I kind of liked the soup that I ordered, but it was a Chinese type of clear soup basically, so I got sick of it after a while. If I go back there again, I'm either ordering a smaller bowl, or trying something other than the soup. Like the smoothies. Bread is all fine and good, but to take the verse out of context, man really doesn't live by bread alone, spiritually or gastronomically. I like pasta better actually. Or ice-cream. Or blended coffees. Got through a few chapters of Principles Of Literary Criticism, which isn't as hard to read as Mr Purvis's query to me on Thursday would suggest. Not sure I agree with all of it, but the point of reading it wasn't to accept or to reject the viewpoint anyway. It's nice to read without having to worry about retaining information for an examination.
