I hereby stand corrected about Kathleen, although I do find it highly ironic that the kind soul who cleared her name didn't leave his/her own name behind. Perhaps more people read this than I thought? The Portrait Of Mrs Charbuque is an intriguing book, just so you know. I've just decided about an hour ago that it's infantile not to study Heart Of Darkness seriously just because I don't like it. Mr Purvis claims that most people like it, but I have an aversion to Conrad. Of all the stories in that anthology I did for my 'O' Levels, I liked The Secret Sharer the least. I vaguely recall that I was quite alone in my preference. While I concede that Heart Of Darkness is good writing, to argue that I should like it for that reason is ridiculous. Chanced upon a comment one of Eugene's friends made about it in his blog, and I totally agree with it. He was saying something about how Conrad's writing style feels like it's been translated from another language. Beautiful, but unnaturally so. To be fair, English was Conrad's third language. I have given up on writing the story by the way, because the whole thing is so bloody pretentious, once you stop to think about it. At least the way I was going about it was hopelessly self-deluded. Scrapping the paragraph I've written and will start from scratch someday. Oh yeah. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can find nice clothes, priced around $50 per article of clothing? I didn't like the current stock at Shaw House's Topman. Went there yesterday with Kelly and Vaish after oral practice at Swiss Cottage. They found me a rather nice long-sleeved t-shirt, one of those that has a full-length zipper like what Zheng Yang wore once to school. I'd have bought it if it didn't cost $46, because I don't see the point of paying that much for something that looks almost like something else I already own, even if it is branded. If I were richer, I would also have been a lot more vacuous. Not that I'm particularly deep, but I could have done worse really... |
