Strange how a piece of paper can have such a singular impact on my mood. Ask me about it if you're that curious, because it's really not worth mentioning here. Stayed happy for pretty much the rest of the day, which was very short anyway. Whizzed through another lecture by Mr McConnell, who has a very nice accent. English 'S' is damn cool! My group met Mr Purvis to discuss our special interest texts. He approves of my choice of Thom Gunn for poetry, and Thomas Hardy for prose. Suggested lots of cool stuff by Hardy that I'm going to check out at Kinokuniya the next time I'm in town and I've got cash. (Incidentally, he concurred with my unvocalised opinion that Kinokuniya is the only bookstore worth going to.) He was less enthusiastic about Oscar Wilde's The Picture Of Dorian Gray, which he says he's sick of. I'm rather ambivalent about Wilde really. Kind of like his plays better, but it's hard to write about plays for the 'S' Paper questions. He also expressed some uncertainty about The Tempest, because the more popular Shakespearean plays so far have been Macbeth and King Lear. In any case, if I do end up studying The Tempest for 'S' Paper, he says he has stuff that he can "dump" on me. Maybe I'll do King Lear together with The Tempest, for which I bear no small amount of affection, it being the first play I ever read. As for worship practice today, that went quite well, which is good and made me happy too. Just need to speed the fast songs up a bit and we should do fine on Sunday! |
