At 8.47 am, I learnt that Singaporean has been recognised as a language. Australian Pacific Touring encourages its tourists to speak to tour consultants in their native languages, and Singaporeans obviously speak Singaporean. Spent half the day in the coach, which wasn't so bad after all. Beautiful scenery out along the Great Ocean Road. I was swiping at flies and rearranging my hair at the Twelve Apostles, when someone tapped me on the shoulder. Who should I bump into but Allen! That was a surprise. Finally tried lamington cake, which Australians are so proud of. It's sponge cake with a layer of jam, coated in chocolate and coconut shavings. Interesting, but not exactly something to shout about. I like fudge better! According to the guide, lamingtons came about when a certain Lord Lamington complained to his servants about the sponge cake that he'd been served. The ingenious servants sliced it, spread jam on it, coated the whole thing in chocolate and coconut. Voila! Lamingtons were created. Food does tend to have very unglamourous origins. Think the sandwich or fries. This week: Great Native Americans Week |
