Just caught Mansfield Park, and this is my favourite piece of dialogue, for reasons which should be decidedly obvious to the more perceptive visitors to this blog.

Susan: "Your tongue is sharper than the guillotine, Fanny."
Fanny: "The effect of education, I suppose."

So the next time anyone accuses you of being sarcastic or cutting, take it as a compliment on your learning. The world of Mansfield Park is one in which I would gladly live, for all its social manoeuvring and false pretense. Not least because I'd be perfectly at home there, ever ready to say the proper, witty thing. Liking the people around you is one thing, liking the life you lead is another. The film's ending was the perfect cliché, and I wouldn't have it any other way. So social climbers, take heart. You might yet succeed! I think I will go to bed now. I do wish my life were different though, I really do...
