"She was perfectly unconstrained and without irritation towards him now, and he was gradually discovering the delight there is in frank kindness and companionship between a man and a woman who have no passion to hide or confess." - Middlemarch by George Eliot (Book I: Miss Brooke, Chapter 8) Picked up Middlemarch again at last, and that was the first thing that caught my eye. How apt that these were the words I stopped at before the holidays. A lot has been happening to everyone lately, and I thought this quote's a good reminder that sometimes, it's better to be just friends. I've been thinking a bit lately, and I still don't know what I want to do. Anyway, the unnamed person I was irritated at has been forgiven, after we had a good chat today. Talking about people without naming them sounds weird. Anyway, it was fun, although I maintain that we should just grab a bunch of friends and do the whole talking about life thing properly over cups and cups of coffee. That'd be fun! It's refreshing to talk honestly with people. There's only so much you can say when you're being acerbic and have to think of a snappy comeback line every other second. Oh, I also (finally) collected my 'O' Level certificate today. A piece of laminated paper that means so much, and yet so little... Watched Gattaca again during GP. Can you imagine being condemned to a second-class existence, just because you hadn't undergone genetic manipulation to make you the sum of the best parts of your parents? I find it really ironic though, that Ethan Hawke, who plays one of these second-class citizens, is the best-looking guy in the entire show. Then again, you wouldn't want to spend more than an hour watching an ugly face, right? Hence the technically inappropriate casting decision. We stopped right at the point when Vincent, in his borrowed identity as Jerome, kisses Irene after punching the daylights out of some guy. All of us just turned to each other and arched our eyebrows. The juxtapositioning of scenes is really peculiar. After watching Gattaca, I've made up my mind. I would have my children genetically manipulated to be as perfect as possible. Call it elitist, or practising eugenics, but I think the gene pool could benefit from a little manipulation. I'll most probably get weeded out along with more than half of the people I know, but what the heck. This week: Hug Week |
