Today has turned out rather nicely in my opinion. Ironically, it was initially beginning to feel like an ordinary boring Wednesday had passed me by once more. Then I stepped out of the MRT, walked into the underpass, and heard Chee Soon Juan blasting the PAP, again. Like most of the people around me, I just walked right past him, carefully taking out my handphone to pretend I was occupied. Maybe I just wanted to walk past looking like I didn't give a damn that he was there. I think the problem with the opposition in Singapore, especially with people like Chee Soon Juan, is that it doesn't know how to criticise the government subtly. You simply cannot go around openly criticising the PAP, especially given their track record, and expect Singaporeans to respect you and vote for you. That kind of sums up why Singapore doesn't have much of an opposition in politics! To round off this interruption to the humdrum existence which is my everyday life, I heard a middle-aged man's handphone ring on the bus as I was getting off. Guess what ringtone he had? Avril Lavigne's Sk8er Boi. It was totally incongruous with his image, go figure. In an experiment with stream of consciousness writing, let me wander back to the time spent in school itself. I borrowed yet another book, which no one else has borrowed yet. It's called Atonement, by Ian McEwan. I've read the first few pages, and it sounds promising. The weird thing was I didn't realise the author and I shared a common first name until I was back in class! The library also just bought The Wheel Of Time series by Robert Jordan. Nice untouched books, as opposed to the torn and tattered ones they used to have. I wanted to borrow the first book on Monday, but someone else got it first. I'll just wait, I guess, there's plenty of time and I intend to buy the books eventually anyway. I do think I spend too much money on books... Something else interesting happened today, but I'm too sleepy to elaborate. By the way, I've given up on trying to learn Latin from that book I borrowed. There's a newer edition anyway. I'll look around for more self-study books when I have the time, perhaps pick up a few on Italian, to learn from scratch, and on French, to brush up. For the time being, I'll carry on with my Quenya, which unfortunately consumes a lot of paper as it has to be printed out! |
